Depression is a medical condition with emotional, behavioral/cognitive, and physical symptoms. It can have a dramatic impact on your health and well-being.

These feelings are not uncommon, and many people experience some degree of depression at some point in their lives. Reaching out for help may feel like desperation, but it is actually a significant step forward. Being willing and open to change and guidance will begin the path to healing.

Situational Depression

Most people can handle day to day stress, but if there are a cluster of stressors in a short period of time a person may begin to feel overwhelmed and unable to function in their daily life. This is called situational depression.

Genetic Depression

People who have always felt low, have a family history of depression or find themselves in a clinical depression with no significant situational cause may have a genetic predisposition to depression. There may be no specific situation that is identifiable as a trigger for the low mood.

There are different treatments for depression. Most often cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is used. This is a complex but well-researched treatment that focuses on challenging negative, and self-defeating thoughts. Other techniques may include mindfulness and relaxation practices. It is strongly recommended that exercise be incorporated into one’s lifestyle and we endorse Yoga practice as well.
