Education & Experience

Ruth-Ann received her Early Childhood Education Certificate in 1978, and her Bachelor Degree in Social Work in 1983. Ruth-Ann interned at the Children’s Psychiatric Outpatient Unit at VGH and the Ministry of Social Services. In 1990, she completed an internship in Bowenian Multi-generational Family Systems Therapy at the North Shore Counselling Centre. In 1996, Ruth-Ann received her Masters Degree in Counselling Psychology from Antioch University, specializing in couples and family counselling.

Ruth-Ann has extensive specialized training.  This training enables her to work effectively with adult survivors of sexual abuse and first nations residential school survivors.  She is also trained in Critical Incident Stress Debriefing, providing leadership/life coaching, conflict resolution, EMDR, and Trauma Therapy.  Much of her work has been with anxiety and depression, trauma survivors, substance misuse, loss and grief, work/life balance, life transition, personal growth, residential school trauma, career exploration, coaching, and relationship issues.

Treatment Philosophy

Ruth-Ann’s practice emphasizes self-compassion and body-mind integration.  Although she adheres to the multi-generational family systems framework, her approach to counselling varies depending upon the issues to be resolved.  This may include Family of Origin work, Person-Centered, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Existential, Humanistic, Ego State Therapy, Neurobiology and Trauma Sensitive Yoga.

Ruth-Ann acknowledges that many issues presented in therapy have roots in early childhood development. She does not believe that a client should live in the past, but she does believe that you may need to go back in order to move ahead.  Ruth-Ann will use her vast array of skills and experience to help you achieve your goals and realize a more fulfilling life.  The course of treatment hinges on such factors as the severity and duration of the issue as well as the motivation and cooperation of the client.
