Content warning: this section references colonial violence, cultural genocide, and Canada’s residential schools.
Stewart & Associates are deeply saddened at the confirmation of the remains of 215 children who were students at the Kamloops Indian Residential School.
We extend our sincerest condolences and stand in solidarity with Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc and all residential school survivors and their families. As Stewart & Associates has a close connection with Indigenous communities, we are committed to providing continued support for those who are affected by this news and reliving the trauma.
We see and we acknowledge the anguish and pain experienced by survivors, families, and community as trauma of past and present oppressions of violence & racism surfaces. We also see and acknowledge the anger that Indigenous voices were not heard, and knowledge not heeded.
We can all play a part in dismantling colonial ideologies and building a better world for all communities and cultures. Please consider these resources to stay informed and help Indigenous communities:
- Donate to the Indian Residential School Survivors Society, the KUU-US Crisis Line Society and other organizations that support survivors.
- Read the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s final report, then act upon and call for the implementation of the 94 calls to action.
- Watch this lecture by Tamara Starblanket, Dean of Academics at the Native Education College and author of Suffer the Little Children: Genocide, Indigenous Nations and the Canadian State.
- Read the article on what non-Indigenous people can do right now
