Richard Marquez, Senior Associate, is a seasoned counseling professional.  Richard has been in the helping profession for over 20 years as a mental health, social work, and public health practitioner, community organizer, and advocate. Richard has extensive counseling experience with various clients, including individuals, couples, and families from diverse professional, social, racial, immigrant, class, and recovery backgrounds.

Richard has significant knowledge of and experience in counseling Health Professionals, Technology Professionals, Film Professionals, First Responders, Building and Trade Professionals, and First Nations. Richard is a contracted service provider to many EAPs and other government programs, including but not limited to Homewood Health, First Nations Health Authority (FNHA), ICBC, Work Safe BC, and E4Health.  

Many extended health benefits plans also cover Richard’s services.  Please get in touch with your provider to determine if you are covered by a Registered Social Worker (RSW).

Fees:

Richard is accepting new clients.

$150 per session (50 min) for Individual Counselling
$180 per session (50 min) for Couples or Family Counselling

Richard can offer a sliding scale fee to a limited number of clients. 

Appointment Schedule:

Richard offers counseling sessions in person, by telephone, and by video.

Mondays: (Remote only) 2 pm, 3 pm, 4 pm, 6 pm

Tuesdays: 10 am, 11 am, 12 pm, 1 pm, 2 pm, 3 pm

Wednesdays:  10 am, 11 am, 12 pm, 2 pm, 3 pm, 4 pm

Thursdays: (Remote only) 7 pm, 8 pm

Fridays:  1 pm, 2 pm, 3 pm, 4 pm, 5 pm

Saturdays: 10 am, 11 am, 12 pm, 1 pm, 2 pm, 3 pm, 4 pm.

Education & Experience

Richard received his Bachelor of Arts degree in social sciences (B.A.) and Master’s in Public Health and Behavioral Sciences (M.P.H.) from the University of California at Berkeley. He received his master’s in clinical social work (MSW) from California State University, San Francisco.
Richard is a Registered Social Worker (RSW) and a member of the British Columbia College of Social Work (Reg #10206), the Canadian Association of Social Workers, and the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers (Reg # 838083).

BCPFFA Endorsed Silver

Richard has completed the Trauma Research Foundation’s Certificate in Traumatic Stress Studies (a 7-month program led by Dr. Bessel van der Kolk and featuring 25 of today’s leading trauma experts). Richard obtained his Certificate of Professional recognition from the Trauma Research Foundation.

Richard received his BCPFFA Silver Seal of Endorsement for completing Levels 1 & 2 of the BC Professional Fire Fighters Association’s Occupational Awareness for Treating First Responder Trauma and has most recently completed training for the Academy of Therapy Wisdom in implicit bias, microaggressions, and racialized trauma, moral injury, and PTSD.

Further, Richard recently completed the Certification of Completion: Course in Grief & Loss with the Living Loss Society of B.C., and completed the Pain Reprocessing Therapy Certification Course, and is registered in the Directory of Practitioners.

Richard has specialized training that includes basic certification in EMDR Therapy and Cognitive Processing Therapy for treating Trauma. This training enables Richard to work effectively with individuals in high-stress professions, individuals impacted by transgenerational trauma and associated symptoms, and affected communities. Moreover, Richard has worked for over five years in Vancouver’s Downtown East Side in distressed communities and provided case management housing and mental health services to homeless people and in single-room occupancy hotels and affordable housing settings. Richard has extensive experience serving First Responders, front-line workers (nurses, paramedics, police, etc.), and military veterans diagnosed with PTSD. Richard is also trained in Critical Incident Stress Debriefing, providing leadership/life coaching, conflict resolution, EMDR, and Trauma Therapy. Much of Richard’s counseling work has been treating mood disorders, e.g., anxiety and depression, addictions, neurodivergent disorders, e.g., ADHD, and complex trauma and post-traumatic stress disorders. Richard counsels clients regarding loss and grief, mental health impacts on managing chronic pain, work/life balance, life transitions, retirement, personal growth challenges, residential school trauma, Sixty Scoop Survivors, intimate partner relationships, and transitioning from involvement in the criminal justice system.

Richard is a person-centered, compassionate clinician, and a multicultural practitioner. He has a unique, sensitive, and empowering perspective on how external and internal dynamics shape and impact the biopsychosocial experiences of human beings and communities.

Richard practices a wide variety of therapy types, including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Compassion Focused, Culturally Sensitive, Dialectical (DBT), Emotionally Focused, Integrative, Interpersonal, Narrative, Person-Centered, Psychodynamic, Solution Focused Brief (SFBT), Internal Family Systems and Trauma Focused practices.
