Counselling Approach & Philosophy
One of the strongest predictors of a positive outcome for therapy is a strong alliance between counsellor and client, regardless of the style of psychotherapy used. Ingrid, therefore, places great emphasis on creating a warm, welcoming environment where clients feel comfortable revealing their true thoughts and feelings without fear of being negatively judged. She is interested in hearing how clients define the issues they seek help for and what they hope to achieve through counselling. However, she also knows that sometimes people don’t know exactly what is bothering them and that it may take some time to sort this out.
It is important to Ingrid that she not assume an ‘ expert’ role with clients. She considers clients to be the experts in their own lives and experiences. Therefore, she strives to work collaboratively with clients to determine the best-suited roadmap for them to move toward their counselling goals. She also feels it is essential to remain flexible and regularly asks clients for feedback about the counselling process. This allows the counselling roadmap to be revised as necessary. Overall, Ingrid’s approach is positive, optimistic and strengths-based. Some of the therapeutic modalities she draws upon, depending on the client’s needs and interests, may include, Motivational Interviewing, Solution-Focused Brief Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT), Narrative Therapy and the like.
