Education & Experience
Susan received her M.Ed. in Counselling Psychology from the University of British Columbia and is registered with the BC Association of Clinical Counsellors (#1452). Her professional training and work experience have given her the opportunity to work with adults, children and adolescents from many different familial, cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds. Likewise, she works with a variety of client concerns including stress, life transition, anxiety, depression, grief, self-esteem, communication, relationship challenges, parenting difficulties, chronic health issues and more.
Counselling Orientation & Philosophy
As the most important ingredient in a successful counselling experience is the quality of the relationship between counsellor and client, Susan places great importance in establishing safety and building rapport with her clients, honoring the unique stories and perspectives they bring. She believes in helping clients tap into their own wisdom. Susan’s approach is collaborative, strength-based, positive and hopeful. She draws from a number of therapeutic models including family systems, insight-oriented, existential and mindfulness-based practices as well as cognitive behavioural and solution-focused therapies. Which specific approach, and what particular tools we might use in a session, depends upon your individual needs and goals for counselling.
Susan is here to help you get unstuck and to gain the necessary tools to move forward and through whatever difficulties or challenges have brought you in. Positive outcomes you can expect from the counselling process may include a greater awareness and understanding of your thoughts and feelings, a reduction in your feelings of distress, healing from past hurts and trauma and an enhanced sense of well-being and purpose.
Your individual goals for therapy will inform the direction of your process. To facilitate success, it is most useful for you to be as honest and open as possible, to discuss any reactions or questions you may have, to attend regularly, and to follow through on assignments between sessions.
